Extreme heat can cause tiles to crack or even pop.

Lately, the weather in Thailand has been extremely hot. While the impact on health is widely recognized, the effects on building materials are often overlooked.
One common issue during the hot season is ceramic tiles cracking, lifting, or even popping off the surface on their own.
What causes this issue?
- Tile Spacing Matters
When temperatures rise, tiles, mortar, and tile adhesive expand. Without proper grout joints or expansion joints, there isn’t enough space to accommodate this expansion — causing the tiles to push against each other and eventually crack or pop.
- Improper Installation
Some installers use the "dollop" method, applying mortar in small lumps (covering less than 80% of the tile's underside). This leaves air gaps beneath the tile, reducing adhesion. When thermal expansion occurs, the tiles are more likely to lift or pop due to insufficient bonding.
- Moisture Buildup + Extreme Heat
In ground-level floors or moisture-prone areas like balconies and bathrooms, trapped moisture beneath the surface can become vapor under intense heat. This vapor pressure can push tiles upward, causing them to warp or even pop off the floor.
When tile tenting or “popping” occurs, it can damage surrounding floors and furniture — and in some cases, even cause injury.
The solution is to remove and reinstall the flooring using qualified professionals who follow proper installation standards. Alternatively, consider switching to more flexible and weather-tolerant materials, such as vinyl flooring — a practical option well-suited to Thailand’s climate.
- No cracking or popping, even under high temperatures
- Professional installers allow materials to acclimate to the environment for 24–48 hours before installation
- Expansion gaps are properly spaced around the perimeter to prevent swelling or warping
- Long-term safety, easy maintenance, and excellent weather resistance
